Himfarms began with a simple idea: to bridge the gap between small, dedicated farmers and families seeking healthy, wholesome food. We saw firsthand the challenges faced by small farmers – limited market access, post-harvest losses, and the pressure to adopt unsustainable practices. We also recognized the growing demand for not just fresh produce, but also the unique and nutritious products of the Himalayan region – from ancient grains and millets to pure ghee, honey, aromatic teas, and the potent healing power of Himalayan herbs and spices, free from harmful chemicals. Driven by our vision to heal the Himalayan soil, restore true Himalayan produce, and revitalize the entire region, we created Himfarms. Our goal is to build a thriving ecosystem where farmers can thrive, communities can nourish themselves, and the environment is protected.

Meet Our Farmers

Dedicated to Quality, From Seed to Table

 

Asha Devi has been farming in the foothills of the Himalayas for over 20 years, following in the footsteps of her parents and grandparents. She’s passionate about preserving traditional farming methods and growing herbs and spices that have been used for generations for their medicinal and culinary properties. Asha specializes in growing a variety of aromatic herbs, including lavender, rosemary, and thyme, which she carefully harvests and dries using time-honored techniques.

 

Asha joined Himfarms because she believes in their mission to support small farmers and promote sustainable agriculture. She’s excited to share her knowledge and her unique herbs with a wider audience. 

 “Himfarms has given me the opportunity to connect directly with customers who appreciate the quality and purity of my herbs,” says Asha. “It’s an honor to share the traditions of my ancestors and contribute to a healthier community.”

Our Commitment to a Better Future

1. Cultivating Sustainable Farming Practices

At Himfarms, we believe that healthy soil is the foundation of a healthy planet. We’re committed to supporting our partner farmers in their transition to sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. This includes:

  • Natural and Organic Methods: We encourage and assist farmers in adopting natural and organic farming methods, reducing their reliance on synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. This minimizes environmental impact, protects biodiversity, and ensures healthier food for consumers.
  • Soil Health Enhancement: We promote practices that improve soil health, such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and composting. Healthy soil sequesters more carbon, enhances water retention, and increases the resilience of farms to climate change.
  • Water Conservation: We encourage water-wise irrigation techniques and efficient water management practices to conserve this precious resource.
  • Local Seed Preservation: We support the use and preservation of local and heirloom seed varieties, protecting agricultural biodiversity and ensuring the resilience of our food systems.

By now, we’ve supported over 50 farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices, impacting over 200 acres of farmland.

We understand that transitioning to sustainable farming can be a challenging process. That’s why we’ve created a unique Income Security Program to support our partner farmers during this crucial period.

  • Financial Stability: Our program provides farmers with a stable income during the transition, allowing them to focus on adopting new practices without the fear of financial loss. This removes a major barrier to change and encourages wider adoption of sustainable methods.
  • Training and Support: In addition to financial security, we offer comprehensive training and support to farmers in sustainable farming techniques, best practices, and business management. This empowers them to succeed in the long term.
  • Building Resilience: By providing income security and support, we help farmers build more resilient businesses that can withstand market fluctuations and environmental challenges.

3. Beyond the Farm: Our Commitment to Sustainable Packaging

At Himfarms, we believe that sustainability extends beyond the farm and into every aspect of our business, including packaging. We’re committed to rethinking packaging with the environment in mind, supporting our farmers in adopting innovative and responsible solutions.

  • Biodegradable Materials: We encourage the use of biodegradable and compostable packaging materials whenever possible, reducing our reliance on traditional plastics and minimizing our impact on landfills.
  • Smart Packaging: We explore and promote the use of smart packaging technologies that can extend the shelf life of produce, reduce spoilage, and provide consumers with valuable information about the product’s origin and freshness.
  • Circular Economy Solutions: We’re investigating and supporting circular economy models for packaging, such as reusable containers and return programs, to minimize waste and promote a more sustainable approach to consumption.
  • Support for Our Farmers: We provide our farmers with the resources and support they need to transition to sustainable packaging solutions, including access to affordable materials, training on best practices, and guidance on navigating labeling requirements.

Himfarms is revolutionizing how we minimize food waste, using data and technology to optimize our supply chain from farm to table.

This direct market access, combined with smart harvesting practices and data-driven scheduling, significantly reduces the opportunities for spoilage and waste.
  • Value-Added Processing: We’re committed to maximizing the use of every harvest. Produce that may not meet aesthetic standards for direct sale is transformed into delicious and nutritious value-added products like jams, sauces, pickles, and dried goods. This not only reduces waste but also creates new opportunities for our farmers.
  • Sustainable Impact: Reducing food waste is a core principle at Himfarms. We’ve reduced post-harvest losses by 37% through our combined efforts, and we’re constantly measuring and refining our processes to further minimize our environmental footprint and maximize the value we deliver to our farmers and customers.
